Out at Sea

You are the one to bring me silence
When the raging sea is no more
Your heavy heart is beating quiet now
As we whisper while we walk towards the shore

We were alone with our footprints
As we crossed the sandy dunes that last day
You held my hand and we kissed there
Until I knew my life would never feel the same

Oh where has my love gone
Cause he can’t hear my cries out at sea
Oh where has my love gone
For he swam for us all to be free

I heard their voices as we laid there
Through the sound of gunfire that last day
I said my darling you must go now
Or you’ll never see these bright lights again

Oh where has my love gone
Cause he can’t hear my cries out at sea
Oh where has my love gone
For he swam for us all to be free

    Oh where’s my lover gone
Oh he’s gone to the island
    Oh where’s my lover gone
Cause he can’t hear me calling

Bella's Fury

And when they call me to that stand
I will not weep for that old man
I’ll tell the preacher not to pray
For I don’t believe I can be saved

So when I hear my footsteps
    They won’t slow me down
For when the cold earth glistens
    I won’t make a sound
    I won’t make a sound

And when I’m dead they’ll lay my bones
Down in the dirt where I belong
For I killed that man, that mother's son
That evil heart that did me wrong

So when I hear my footsteps
    They won’t slow me down
For when the cold earth glistens
    I won’t make a sound
    I won’t make a sound

Cap in Hand

Take your life, be sure to fill your cup with wine
Take my hand, this journey's gonna be just fine

You don’t know where I’ve been

Came to town, with just a cap in hand
Bold as brass, not even a cent to my name
So I looked for work every where I could
Eventually someone took me in

Started out as a farmers boy
Old John brown got me working land
Then things changed
The old man got sick with age
And as time went by
The land became mine

You don't know where I've been

Absent Friends

Lights dim down and the candles flicker faster in the colder night
Time to spend a moment thinking of a loved one who's come to your mind
And now you can’t stop
As your friends all slide away

As you sing you fall back in time
And hope this song will never end
As you drink your eyes glaze, you smile
And raise a glass to absent friends

Picture all the times you spent, the years you lent,
The singing, crying on the way home
It was for all the times they stayed, you drank your dreams
Alive all night long
And you can’t stop
But your hands can’t stay awake

As you sing you fall back in time
And hope this song will never end
As you drink your eyes glaze, you smile
And raise a glass to absent friends
We know we’re going to meet again

And now you cant stop
You can't stop

As you sing you fall back in time
And hope this song will never end
As you drink your eyes glaze, you smile
And raise a glass to absent friends
We know we’re going to meet again

The Outlaw

Gold is all that I will bring you, said the outlaw to his son
Cause money makes the world go round
But if you get caught you must run

We keep starting over and over again
We keep starting over and over again

A coin is all that I will throw you
If you need me when you’re gone
Cause lying makes the world go round
Forget your morals dear just run

We keep starting over and over again
We keep starting over and over again

Till the running starts to tire our souls
And this fighting will not fill this hole
Because all these selfish acts will all end in tears
Till the tears dry up and we’re frozen still,
Till all the love has been lost

And we don’t care, we don’t care
We don’t care, we don’t care

We keep starting over and over again

Worker's War

In the morning I work for the wrong man,
I work for the rich man
You can’t take that bed away from me
In the evening I lay with a poor man,
I lay with a good man
You can’t take that bed away from me

Making fun of him became the easiest way to push him out
But now I hear the firm is full of little boys who like to scream and shout

23 when he took that job for family
While his loyalty over years came to nothing
For the company does not care about the workers any more

In the morning I work for the wrong man,
I work for the rich man
You can’t take that bed away from me
In the evening I lay with a poor man,
I lay with a good man
You can’t take that bed away from me

Gone are the Days

The moon gave a warning sign
It said please listen to the brave one
Who hides behind your eyes
So I took that moon's advice
And I dragged out the truth that I'd covered up
And took a good look inside

So don’t you knock on that door again
Give me space to grieve
Don’t you knock on that door again
Give me space to leave

We’ve been together for a long, long time
We’ve been together for a long, long time
We’ve held each other for a long, long time
But I think our time has…

So give me back my love
Because it was sweeter than a humming bird
Singing to her young
Don’t complicate this choice
It was a lonely year that I recall clinging to remorse

Don’t you knock on that door again
Give me space to leave

We’ve been together for a long, long time
We’ve been together for a long, long time
We’ve held each other for a long, long time
But I think our time has…

Don’t you knock on that door again
Give me space to leave

We’ve been together for a long, long time
We’ve been together for a long, long time
We’ve held each other for a long, long time
But I think our time has come

Gone are the days when we’d share our thoughts
And we’d love so freely, so freely
Gone are the days when we’d watch each other sleep
    So sweetly, so sweetly

Moths

As dust holds a trick that brings out all the webs on a cloudy day
Summer is coming and before you know he’ll be here again
I don’t understand, no.
I don’t understand, no.

But when the dawn comes calling for lovers to kiss
And your heart is fated it’s sealed with a wish

So hold me close till I don’t remember her
And I’ll take our love out by the orchard, safe from harm
Hold me close when I don’t want to go
And I’ll take our love out by the orchard, safe from harm

As moths gather steam, they blow hope to the west with their fleeting ways
But autumn is coming and before you know they’ll be hell to pay
I don’t understand, no.
I don’t understand, no.

But when the dawn comes calling for lovers to kiss
And your heart is fated, it’s sealed by a wish

So hold me close till I don’t remember her
And I’ll take our love out by the orchard, safe from harm
Hold me close when I don’t want to go
And I’ll take our love out by the orchard, safe from harm

Light up, light up, you light up the dawn
You light up, you light up, you light up the dawn

Numb

I did not see the apples that were growing on the trees
And I did not hear the wolf behind my back
I have no plans to visit you upon those tracks of green
Because I only feel the noose around my neck

I did not think it over when I let that wolf me in
Cause I did not see the danger in its eyes
Now my body is a prisoner
To the bitter sweet call
Of the highest low that’s keeping me alive

Because on this cold dark mountain
I am calm as can be
So go and tell it to the mountain
Because that is where you will find me

I have to stop the calling because I want to save my soul
And I’m sorry that I left you for so long
You see that needle held a little hope that numbed me to my core
But I have to feel the sunlight once again

Because on this cold, dark mountain
I am scared as can be
So go and tell it to the mountain
Because that is where you will find me

This Book of Ours

The moment's here
In this room,
In this room

You look so tired
And I am too,
I am too

    Calling out without sound
Till I see your eyes looking down

We grew up fast
Much too soon,
Much too soon

This book of ours now
It has no room,
It has no room

    Calling out without sound
Till I see your eyes looking down

John Harvey

Climbing tree trunks
Knowing which way they fall
Cut the last piece wrong
And you’ll climb back down no more

J Harvey was a lumber
He cut it all his life
There never was a better man
To cut things just right

Did he know when he cut that branch?
Did he call did he say a prayer his last?
Did he fall?  Did he fall?
Or did he cut himself away?

He and Lucy grew up lovers
Savoured every day
But cold nights just got longer
With John at work away

Did he know when he cut that branch?
Did he call did he say a prayer his last?
Did he fall? Did he fall?
Or did he cut himself away?

Children through to church men
Were accused of the crime;
The death of J Harvey,
A mystery for all time
